🚨Legislation alert: Plastic pollution is killing the planet – NYC must do its part to stop this

The terrible heat waves happening around the world are one of many signs that our planet is in trouble.

But in addition to global warming, there’s another environmental crisis that is spiraling out of control, and it demands action.

In our oceans, billions of pounds of plastic can be found in swirling convergences that make up about 40 percent of the world’s ocean surfaces. At current rates, plastic is expected to outweigh all the fish in the sea by 2050.

New York City is contributing to this problem with tons of unused plastic utensils and other single-use plastics that end up in the trash every day.

I’m proud to be a prime co-sponsor of Intro 0559-2022, otherwise known as “Skip the Stuff,” which would require restaurants, food delivery apps, and online delivery platforms to give out single use plastic utensils, napkins, and condiments only when it is requested by the customer.

Sponsored by Council Member Marjorie Velazquez, this sensible legislation will cut down on plastic waste and other unwanted trash and also save NYC’s restaurants money every year by reducing operating costs.

To learn more about this critical legislation, I am inviting you to a virtual panel discussion with Reusable NYC about this legislation on Tuesday, July 26 at 7:00 p.m.

Upon registration and prior to Tuesday, we will share a link with you to the groundbreaking documentary The Story of Plastic, a searing exposé revealing the ugly truth behind plastic pollution and the false solution of plastic recycling.

Thank you for your support and partnership on this very important issue.
