Ritchie Torres for US Congress: Closing the chapter on the tale of two cities

I grew up in a housing project that was full of leaks and lead, with no reliable heat or hot water in the winter. There was also toxic mold — which posed serious health risks like long-term respiratory illness. All the while, Donald Trump and his wealthy buddies toasted to the good life across the street.

More than two decades later, the conditions my neighbors and I lived under haven’t gotten any better. As of July, the city has received 100,760 work-order tickets about mole. And according to an independent watchdog, more than a quarter of those complaints remained unresolved for longer than the two-week window in which NYCHA is supposed to resolve them.

I’m urging Manhattan Federal Judge William Pauley to appoint a mold ombudsman whose job will be to address the thousands of yet-to-be-resolved mold complaints. The position should have been filled more than a year ago — and NYCHA residents are tired of waiting.

I’m going to continue fighting for working families across the Bronx, because I know what it’s like to feel forgotten and ignored. Let’s work close the chapter on the tale of two cities, once and for all.
