Twenty years ago, Columbine lost too many lives far too early. The nation as a whole woke up to what many communities had already known: America is in the midst of a gun violence epidemic.
We have never known a world without school shootings. We have never experienced a country where students aren’t afraid to go to school. But we are a generation who refuses to accept this as normal. We refuse to believe Americans must accept getting shot in their schools, in their places of worship, in their streets — anywhere.
Our hearts go out to the Columbine community. Your resilience is an inspiration to us — students that are still going through the same trauma 20 years later.
Columbine should never have happened. And it should have been the last school shooting in this country.
From all of us and with love,
